This professional learning opportunity is offered to Virginia educators who teach history. Originally offered to the inaugural cohort of history teachers piloting the African American History elective course in Virginia, this series addresses the critical skills needed to develop and sustain a culturally responsive and inclusive classroom. Participants will gain a better understanding of cultural competence as they explore how race, equity, and culture has impacted history. 

This series includes five, 90-minute professional learning seminars for Virginia history teachers. All sessions will be held virtually on Wednesdays beginning at 5:00 p.m. There will also be two FREE introductory sessions for all Virginia educators.

Introductory Sessions

Two introductory sessions will be offered free to all Virginia Educators by the VDOE History and Social Science Program and will introduce key concepts needed to advance proficiency in African American History as a culturally responsive practitioner, and give an overview of the full 5-part professional learning series offered by VCU. Although there is no cost for the two introductory sessions, advance registration is required:

Note: The introductory sessions will provide the same information. You only need to select one to attend.

More about the 5-session series

There are two options for participation in the 5-session series. Option A will begin on October 27, 2021 and Option B will begin on February 2, 2022.  All sessions will be held virtually on Wednesdays from 5:00 p.m. - 6:30 p.m.

There is a $225 registration fee for the series (inludes 5, 90 minute sessions). Participants must register either for Option A or Option B.
